Physical hydraulic modelling
For complex free-surface flows, free-jet behaviour, air entrainment, sediment-laden hydraulics and bridge pier scour — physical modelling remains indispensable. We build, instrument and run scale models in-house at the IHE Lab.
Typical applications: spillway operation, energy dissipator verification, intake vortex behaviour, pier and abutment scour, training works arrangement.
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
Three-dimensional CFD lets us interrogate flow detail that no physical model can resolve at scale — pressure distributions on a spillway crest, cavitation risk indices, secondary current patterns. We run CFD as a parallel track to physical studies, not in place of them.
Recent applications include CFD modelling of Piano Key Weirs for dam retrofit briefs in a changing climate.
Mathematical & numerical modelling
1D models for long river reaches and channel networks. 2D depth-averaged models for floodplain inundation, urban flooding and tidal hydraulics. Coupled hydrology-hydraulics for full catchment-to-structure simulation.
We document every assumption — boundary conditions, roughness selection, mesh independence — so reviewers can interrogate the work.
